What is an API, and why is it the key to integrations in your business?

The word API comes up in almost every conversation about software, but it's rarely explained in plain terms. If you want your systems to work together instead of moving data around by hand, it's worth understanding what it means.
An API, explained simply
An API is a kind of waiter between two programs. Sitting at your table, you don't walk into the kitchen to cook your own meal. You tell the waiter what you want, they take the order and bring you the result. In the same way, one program asks another for something through an API and gets the answer back, without needing to know how the other system works on the inside.
Why it matters for your business
APIs are what allow your systems to talk to each other. A few examples you see every day, perhaps without realising it:
- Your shop automatically sends the order to the courier and gets the AWB (waybill) back.
- Your website generates the invoice in your accounting software without you typing it up.
- Card payments go through a payment processor, securely, without you ever touching the card details.
- Stock levels stay in sync between your website, eMAG and your physical shop.
Without APIs, you'd do all of this by hand: copying, pasting and entering the same data two or three times, with the inevitable mistakes.
What a good integration looks like
An API integration means two systems exchange data automatically, in real time, with no human involvement. A good integration stays stable as volumes grow, keeps data secure as it moves, and makes it clear when something has gone wrong.
What if a system has no API?
It happens. Some older programs don't offer a clear way to connect. In those cases there are alternative solutions, but it's good to know early on, because it affects the effort and the cost. That's why, whenever you choose new software, you should always ask whether it has an API.
How we help
We integrate with almost any system that offers an API and, when needed, we build the API you need ourselves. If you're losing time moving data from one program to another, there's almost certainly a way to connect them. Get in touch and we'll tell you what's possible.
