Mobile-first design: why the phone comes first

If you look at who visits your website, you'll discover one thing: most people arrive on a phone. And yet many websites are still designed for a computer and only then squeezed onto the small screen. The right approach is the other way round: mobile-first.

What mobile-first means

Mobile-first means designing the website for the phone first and only then expanding it for larger screens. It sounds like a detail, but it changes everything: it forces you to keep only what matters, make the text readable and make the buttons easy to tap with a finger.

Why it matters

• Most traffic is mobile. If your website looks poor on a phone, you lose most of your visitors.
• Google judges by mobile. The search engine looks first and foremost at the mobile version of your website.
• Conversions go up. A website that is easy to use on a phone turns more visitors into customers.

Common mistakes

Text that is too small, buttons crammed together that are hard to tap, pop-ups that cover the whole screen, images that load slowly on mobile data. All of these drive visitors away before they see what you offer.

Mobile-first doesn't mean basic or ugly

A mobile-first website can be just as rich and attractive on a computer. The difference is that it was designed to work perfectly everywhere, not just on the designer's screen.
